18 August 2004 , BERLIN - Iraq will be sending an ambassador to Berlin in the coming weeks - for the first time in 13 years, a German Foreign Office spokesman said. Alaa Abdul Majid Hussain al-Hashimy will take up duties in the German capital in advance of the scheduled September 9 visit of Iraqi Interim President Ghazi al-Yawer. BERLIN - Iraq will be sending an ambassador to Berlin in the coming weeks - for the first time in 13 years, a German Foreign Office spokesman said.

Alaa Abdul Majid Hussain al-Hashimy will take up duties in the German capital in advance of the scheduled September 9 visit of Iraqi Interim President Ghazi al-Yawer.

The 51-year-old diplomat lived and worked in Germany for years as a dissident to the regime of Saddam Hussein.

In the wake of the 1991 Gulf War, Germany and Iraq have been represented in each other's capitals only by charges d'affaires.
