Berlin condemns attack on Israeli embassy in Egypt
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle condemned Saturday the attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo by protesters who stormed the building.
A new escalation of violence between the countries must "absolutely" be avoided, he said, calling on the Egyptian authorities to honour their international obligations to embassy protection.
Protesters stormed the building that houses the embassy overnight Friday-to-Saturday, smashing through an external security wall, tossed embassy papers from balconies and tearing down the Israeli flag
Three people were killed during the unrest and more than 1,000 injured, including 300 police, authorities said.
Since Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's ouster in February after a popular revolt, activists have called for a revision of the peace treaty with Israel.
