Police in the German capital said the surprised driver, 46, who was not hurt, was unable to explain why he ignored warning signs that the railway bridge was only 3.7 metres high.

Officials were relieved that no passengers were on board. Most of the roof of the 4.6-metre-high vehicle was ripped away. Berlin is one of the few cities using double-deckers to save road space. They have two sets of inside stairs.
