VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday received his first official state visit, that of Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Ciampi was accompanied by his wife Franca and by a delegation comprising Italian foreign minister Gianfranco Fini.

The pope and the president held a 20-minute private talk in what was described as a "friendly" atmosphere at the Vatican.

German-born Joseph Ratzinger, who was elected pope on 19 April, will return the courtesy with a visit to Ciampi's Quirinale Palace on 24 June, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.
