Bean sprouts from the German state of Lower-Saxony are suspected of being the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak which has killed 22 people, the region's government said Sunday.

State Agriculture Minister Gert Lindemann said that while the suspicion needed to be proved, "the clues are however so strong that we must recommend that consumers stop eating bean sprouts for now".

Laboratory analysis is expected Monday on samples of bean sprouts taken from a local garden centre, the minister told a press conference in Hanover.

The centre produces bean sprouts for salads in Germany, but also works with other European countries and East Asia, he said.
