LANDSHUT, GERMANY - Michael Ballack on Wednesday agreed to pay a fine of 70,000 euros (89,600 dollars) to avoid a court case over an expensive handbag the Germany captain did not declare at customs.

The Landshut court said that Ballack brought his girlfriend a handbag worth 2,000 euros from a January training camp in Dubai at his then club Bayern Munich.

He was stopped by customs at Munich airport who found the bag and toys for his three children, all purchased duty free. Ballack reportedly believed he didn't have to declare the items.

Ballack, who is now at English champions Chelsea, rejected an earlier 50,000-euro fine to settle the affair. A court date was set for Thursday, but a settlement finally reached on Wednesday.
