The death toll from the outbreak of a lethal strain of E. coli centred in northern Germany rose to 25 on Wednesday after regional authorities reported the death of a male patient.

The health ministry in the northern state of Lower Saxony said tests confirmed the man died of the same bug responsible for the outbreak but did not say when he died or provide his age.

A total of 24 people, mostly women, have now died in Germany, and one woman died in Sweden soon after returning from Germany.

Authorities are yet to identify the source of the outbreak, which has left more than 2,600 people ill in at least 14 countries. German consumers are being advised to avoid raw sprouts, cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.
