SYDNEY - One of Australia's leading winemakers has been honoured with Germany's highest prize, news reports said Monday.

German-born Wolf Blass received the Cross of the Order of Merit for his contribution to a positive relationship between Australia and Germany.

The 71-year-old arrived in Australia in 1961. Blass is a Member in the Order of Australia, but says the award from his country of birth is more significant.

"I don't think I ever could have dreamt about this, because this is a very, very rare issue, and I can only say that when I heard about this, I took it in disbelief, because such occasions don't just happen every day," he told Australia's AAP news agency.
