Emsdetten, Germany (dpa) - A masked ex-pupil entered his former school in Germany Monday shooting and wounding several people before killing himself with his pistol, a prosecutor told German TV stations.

Police delayed an inspection of his prone body because it appeared to have explosives attached to it.

Police said all persons trapped by the shooting were free. A police spokesman said the attacker had fired several bullets in the playground of the secondary school, in the town of Emsdetten near the Dutch border, about two hours after the day's lessons had begun.

Germany's WDR television said most pupils managed to run away and took refuge in a school building or on nearby premises.

A teacher told the broadcaster the attacker had graduated from the Scholl high school after passing exams.

Several children were grazed by bullets. Unconfirmed reports said a school caretaker and a pregnant teacher were wounded, but police had still not issued a toll of the wounded by early afternoon.

Initially armed police attempted to negotiate with the masked attacker. Police said they did not shoot him.

Emsdetten is about 150 kilometres north of Cologne in North Rhine Westphalia.
