BERLIN - The number of foreigners applying for political asylum in Germany totalled 35,607 in 2004, the lowest number in 20 years, Interior Minister Otto Schily said.

The figure was down some 30 percent from the 50,563 asylum- seekers registered in 2003. Most of those seeking asylum were from Turkey.

"After the strong rises seen at the start of the 1990s, the number of initial applications has been lowered to the level of 1984 again," Schily said about the ongoing decline in asylum-seekers.

At the same time, Germany last year recognised just 960 persons as qualifying for asylum, he reported.
