HAMBURG - The German army is to step up security at its Hamburg-based military staff academy where Iraqi officers are to be trained, the weekly Spiegel reports.

The academy is to conduct a training course for 22 Iraqi general staff officers, Spiegel said in a report released ahead of publication next week.

Armed soldiers with dogs are to replace civilian security guards, Spiegel said. Vehicles are to be examined for hidden explosive charges.

The training of the officers follows a commitment made by the German government at a NATO summit last year.
