Berlin (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel will have talks Friday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London focused on Germany's joint presidency next year of the European Union and the G8 club of industrial nations, a spokesman said.

International and bilateral issues will also be on the agenda, said Merkel's spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm.

Germany holds the rotating EU presidency for the first half of 2007 and Merkel is keen to revive the bloc's constitution which was torpedoed by voters in France and the Netherlands last year.

Blair has always been wary of the draft EU constitution while Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett recently went further by declaring it was a "grandiose project" which had failed and that she would oppose any attempt revive the treaty in its present form.

All 25 EU member states must approve the constitution for it to enter into force.

Germany holds the Group of Eight (G8) presidency for all of 2007 and will host the group's summit in June at the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm.

G8 member states are: Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.
