NEUSS, GERMANY - A baby-faced doll with clothes and hairdo just like those of Germany's first woman chancellor, Angela Merkel, 51, went on sale Monday, weeks before Merkel will be ready to take power.

The 46-centimetre-tall doll features real human hair in Merkel's pageboy style and the dark blue pants suit that is her fashion trademark. The pearl necklace worn over a pink T-shirt was inspired by Merkel's attire on election night last month.

Designer Marcel Offermann, 34, who runs a "dolls' hospital" repair shop in the western city of Neuss, ordered the exclusive figures from the Schildkroet doll factory in Germany in an edition limited to just 999.

He said the constant tweaking of Merkel's hairstyle before the September 18 election had made it difficult for him to get the styling and hair colour just right.

His shop had already sold more than 80 dolls sight unseen at EUR 189 apiece to fans of the Christian Democratic leader.

The real Merkel has reached agreement with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats to form a cabinet, but she will not be sworn in till they have spent a month settling a policy accord.
