KEMPTEN - A male nurse in Germany has admitted to killing two more seriously ill patients "to put them out of their misery", bringing the known toll in the serial killing to 12, investigators said Monday.

The 25-year-old man is in custody in Kempten, southwestern Germany. He has admitted injecting a deadly cocktail of drugs into patients in his care. Fellow staff noticed the drugs were missing.

Prosecutors in Kempten said they could not rule out further killings coming to light. They are studying 80 deaths, examining patient-treatment records and conducting exhumations to determine if the other deaths were of natural causes.

The patients were all elderly and seriously ill in Sonthofen Hospital on the slopes of the Alps.

The man claimed he administered lethal doses of sedatives and painkillers because they were "vegetating" and he wanted to "release" them from further suffering. He confessed the killings began in March 2003. The most recent of the deaths was on July 10.

Police have calculated the nurse had helped himself to enough sedatives and painkillers to kill dozens of people.
