MUNICH - A court in Germany fined an American tourist about EUR 1,200 (USD 1,500) and ordered him released from four weeks of detention on remand - all because he tried to steal a 5-dollar beer mug from a popular Munich beer hall.

The 22-year-old sociology student from New Mexico was thrown in jail in July after what was termed an altercation with an employee of Munich's famed Hofbraeuhaus beer hall.

He had attempted to leave the premises with a stein to take home as a souvenir. When stopped at the door he allegedly started a scuffle. He was charged with attempted theft, disturbing the peace, malicious destruction of property and assault causing bodily harm.

"This is a kind of a sport with tourists at Munich beer halls," an expert witness told the court. "If the waiters didn't keep an eye on things, the beer halls would soon run out of dinnerware and crockery."
