French engineering giant Alstom group on Tuesday announced plans to cut 1,380 jobs in Germany, Italy and Spain from its transport division "to address the lower demand in these countries".

The planned job cuts are "focused on some industrial sites of (Alstom's) transport sector in Germany, Italy and Spain", the company said in a statement.

Its German operation will suffer the biggest cut, with 700 jobs going from its Salzgitter factory in northern Germany to "address the necessary improvement of its competitiveness and its insufficient expected workload".

Alstom also plans to scrap 400 jobs in Barcelona and 280 positions at Italian sites, including the already announced closure of the Colleferro site.

"This plan is designed to address the lower demand in these countries and to keep the competitiveness of its industrial base," it added.

"The planned reduction therefore represents a total of 1,380 positions. The non-renewal of temporary contracts in the concerned sites would be added," the company said in its statement.
