BERLIN - Organic farming continues to expand in Germany with environmentally-friendly methods now being used on 4.7 per cent of all cropland in the country, the Agriculture Ministry said Wednesday.

About 807,400 hectares (2 million acres) is now being farmed under certified European Union organic methods in Germany, said a statement.

This was an increase of more than 39,500 hectares over the previous year, the statement said.

Organic produce with the "bio" label is growing in popularity and even German discount supermarket chains such as Plus have introduced a range of organic products.
