WASHINGTON - The German Jewish family comedy 'Alles auf Zucker!' was the big winner at the 55th German Film Awards Friday, taking the top prize in six categories including best film.
'Alles auf Zucker!' (Go for Zucker) portrays two different Jewish brothers separated as youngsters. One turned out to be a sports reporter with a gambling problem, while the other became an orthodox Jew.
Although they are opposites, they are reunited when their dying mother demands that they spend time together or be denied their inheritance.
'Alles auf Zucker!' took the top prizes, known as Golden Lolas, for best actor (Henry Huebchen), best director (Dani Levy), best screenplay (Dani Levy and Holger Franke), best music (Niki Reiser) and best wardrobe (Lucie Bates).
The film was in many ways considered groundbreaking in Germany, where poking fun at Jewish life has been taboo since the Holocaust.
The award for best film carries a EUR 500,000 award with it.
The Silver Lolas for films went to 'Die fetten Jahren sind vorbei' (The Edukators) by Hans Weingartner and to 'Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage' (Sophie Scholl - The Last Days).
