BERLIN - Ailing German Defence Minister Peter Struck Friday cancelled a visit to Afghanistan, on advice of his cardiologists.

Struck, 61, who was hospitalized Thursday with a cardio-vascular condition, was to have visited German peacekeeping troops in Afghanistan next week.

Doctors at Berlin's Charité Hospital Friday said the cabinet minister's condition was improving but that he would remain in the cardiac ward for observation.

The defence minister took ill after returning to Berlin on Tuesday from a trip to Djibouti and Israel.

Struck has a history of cardiac problems. In the 1980s he suffered two heart attacks, and four years ago he was operated on for a narrowing of the carotid artery in his neck.
