Afghan refugee Miss Germany admits lying about age
The winner of a Miss Germany 2010 beauty pageant was in hot water Thursday after admitting lying about her age, but she said that she had done so when fleeing Afghanistan as a refugee.
"Oh well! It doesn't really does matter does it?" the Bild daily quoted Miss Deutschland, Zallascht Sadat, who had given her age as 24 when in fact she is 28, as saying. "The main thing is I look great."
The brunette beauty said she had had a justifiable reason.
"When I fled Afghanistan with my family ... I pretended I was younger in order to make getting into the United States easier," she explained.
Her family, however, ended up settling in the western German city of Frankfurt.
Sadat won the Miss Deutschland pageant, which differs from the older Miss Germany contest, on Sunday.
She will retain her title, nonetheless, keep her crown and 6,000 euros (7,400 dollars) in prize money, and go on to compete in the Miss Europe and Miss International pageants.
She has also started a charity raising money for people with HIV/AIDS in Afghanistan, the Zallascht Sadat Foundation (http://www.zallascht.com/).
