LONDON - British Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley, who starred in the film "Ghandi", has separated from his German wife after only 16 months of marriage, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Friday.

The 61-year-old actor, famous for his Shakespeare roles, and his wife Alexandra, 30, had led "separate lives for some time", the paper quoted from a statement by Kingsley's Los Angeles publicists.

The couple met at the Berlin Film Festival in 2002, both claiming it had been love at first sight, the paper said.

But Alexandra, who moved to Kingsley's home in Oxfordshire soon after the couple met, is said to have "been bored with life in the English countryside".

She returned to Berlin with her six-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

In a recent interview, Kingsley said: "What I found unacceptable in some of my relationships with women is the feeling of giving away my power to be the person she wants me to be."

Kingsley, who was knighted in 2002, has been married three times. Friends of Alexandra told the paper the actor's "overbearing manner" had been partly to blame for the break-up.
