Berlin (dpa) - A group of anti-car activists has been letting the air out of the tyres of luxury cars and SUVs in upmarket areas of Berlin, the daily Tagesspiegel reported Friday.

The activists leave behind flyers accusing the owners of polluting the environment. The owners are urged to use their enforced walk to reflect on the virtues of owning a smaller vehicle.

Police said they were aware of 53 separate incidents over the past 10 days, with most of the attacks carried out at night.

The anti-car campaign is thought by Berlin police to be unrelated to the firebombing by leftist activists of 83 vehicles so far this year, mainly in the less well-off areas of Mitte and Friedrichshain- Kreuzberg.
