Around 40 children in Germany were injured Tuesday when a car rammed their school bus while trying to merge onto a road, authorities said.

About 110 pupils aged 10 to 14 were riding to school in the southern town of Lenting when a 58-year-old woman prematurely pulled out of a lay-by and struck the bus, according to a police statement.

The bus driver, 46, applied the brake but was unable to avert the crash.

"Two boys and a girl who suffered moderate injuries due to the sudden brake manoeuvre were taken to hospital in ambulances," the statement said.

A total of about 40 children were hurt, most of them slightly, and about half of them were treated in area hospitals.
