WIESBADEN, GERMANY - Authorities in Germany Wednesday said a roundup of dozens of suspects in a score of cities had unearthed a network of petty crime syndicates funnelling illicit money to Islamic terrorists.

Raids by 500 law-enforcement officers in Frankfurt and about 20 other cities in central Germany on Tuesday rounded up 1,260 persons for brief questioning. A total of 38 arrests were made.

The raids came in the wake of findings that some of the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks in Madrid and London had been involved in petty theft and drugs trafficking.

"This measure is a pre-emptive attack on criminal Islamic structures," said Volker Bouffier, Hesse state interior minister.

"Their tainted money goes to support international extremists or terrorists," he said.
