LUEBECK - Customs agents in the Baltic Sea port city of Luebeck seized around 3 million cigarettes apparently smuggled into the country on a Latvian ship, officials said Tuesday.

The officials said the haul was made on Sunday when agents carried out a routine check of a lorry. They found around 15,000 cartons of cigarettes hidden behind piles of lumber inside the lorry.

The vehicle had arrived in Luebeck on board a ferry from Riga. The customs agents believed the cigarettes' final destination was to be the Netherlands. The taxes on the cigarettes amount to EUR 400,000.
