Perhaps because of its location in the former American sector of Berlin, the Free University has a broad North American slant, with several disciplines focusing on intercultural studies. The university offers courses in biology, chemistry, medicine and psychology, as well as liberal arts subjects such as education, philosophy, history and cultural studies. There are law, business and physics students here as well. The university has about 34,000 students.

Housed in the former palaces of Prussian royalty, Humboldt Universität focuses on the traditional contemplative arts of maths, philosophy, humanities, law and theology. The university also offers business and economics classes. The school has just under 40,000 students, though it’s hard to tell who’s a student and who’s a tourist due to its location on the historic Unter den Linden boulevard.

As the name implies, the Technische Universität is focused on the technical: engineering, architecture and mathematics. This covers everything from electrical engineering and urban planning to biotechnology. The university offers the full portfolio of natural sciences, including medicine, and has a humanities division, but the majority of students here are budding geeks rather than artists. The university is on the fringe of Charlottenburg and boasts several examples of modern German architecture. It is the smallest of the city’s universities, with just 27,000 students.
