I'm from the United States but have been living abroad for about 5 years now (Chile, Japan and now Switzerland). I live with my Colombian husband and our two year old son in Lausanne and when not eating copious amounts of cheese or studying French, I can usually be found trudging up and down one of Lausanne's many hills as I attempt to uncover the mysteries of my newly adopted home country.
As we all know, Switzerland is an incredibly diverse land with multiple languages and traditions. The fact that we as expats are just as varied in both our backgrounds and our reasons for being here, makes it a particularly challenging task to try and define or generalize what it's like to be an expat in Switzerland. Because of this, my hope is that Expatica can be used as a means of sharing our unique experiences, as well information that is both interesting and useful for all of us.
Naturally how I perceive Swiss culture and the expat experience will be influenced by my American origins as well as the fact that I live in the French speaking region of Switzerland. Therefore I look forward to hearing your input on what life is like for you in Switzerland. I'm eager to hear about what it's like to be English in Zurich, Australian in Basel, Scottish in Geneva, South African in Fribourg, Canadian in Ticino and so on and so on!
Each week in addition to our regular news and features, we plan to feature content on the site that comes directly from our readers. This means that if you have photographs, blog entries, essays or articles about your experience as an expat in Switzerland, please send them along! In addition, letters to the editor with comments and suggestions are highly encouraged. To many throughout the world, Switzerland consists of a bunch of bankers sitting around on snowy mountain tops and yodeling to each other while scarfing down chocolate bars. On Expatica we plan to go beyond the stereotypes as we explore the depths and delights of this fascinating country called Switzerland!
