An American expat learns to change her habits to adapt to her adopted country and ends up annoying locals.
So like most things, I overdid it − I am now überpünktlich − and it has had all kinds of strange consequences including driving my German colleagues and friends nuts.
Hi, I find your problem interesting as I fell into the same misunderstanding of the Deutsche.
I used to be responsible for EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) testing and conformity in a British company. Some of our products were going for export to Germany, and I had long believed that the Germans were very strick on control and compliance. I therefore made double sure that the products for export were 100% in compliance. A colleague , who happened to be German, remarked to me that I was being unnecessarily
cautious as the Germans always set a standard that was higher than they expected folk to comply with. Later having moved to live here in Germany, I found out that he was absolutely correct. The standards that I had been so worried about are almost ignored, other safety measures are way below what is expected in England. Generally motorists consider the speeding controls as a challenge to outwit the police, etc.etc. It is not such a bad way to delivery regulation, but it takes a bit of getting used to, especially the driving laws, as one is never quite sure if the law will be strictly applied on this occasion.
Enjoy, have a good Xmas,
