02/10/2009Jacinta’s World: Getting managed by my kid

Jacinta’s World: Getting managed by my kid Jacinta Nandi aka Candi Girl gets some advice from her five-year-old and details what’s on in Berlin this month.

So my son really supports me with my poetry slam career; he always asks me whether I won or not. One morning, when I’d been at the Bastard Slam the night before but had arrived too late and not allowed on, I said to him: “So you didn't ask whether I won the poetry slam?”

He looked at me, genuinely interested but a bit hesitant: “So, did you win?”

“No,” I said, “they didn't let me do the slam.”

He looked skeptical now, distrustful:  “They didn't let you?”

“There were already too many people,” I explained, “and so they told mummy, no, you just watch the others. They were there first, you know.”

He looked at me carefully and nodded: “Mum, next time you go and they say you're not allowed, tell them if they don't let you, you will never do another one, okay? You say to them: ‘Okay, if you don't let me go on the stage then I will never again come to you and do a poetry slam.’ Then they will let you on, Mum, okay.”

I said nothing, handed him a plate of pasta (it was a weekend and he likes pasta for breakfast at the weekend) and watched Rico tucking him in with great gusto. He gasped and put his spoon down, a thought had just occurred to him.

“Mum, better you don't do that, they might get really angry!” he said. “Don't do it, okay. It's not such a good idea!”

“Awright,” I said, grinning. “I won’t.”

It is nice, being managed … by a five-year-old.

THINGS TO DO IN BERLIN IN OCTOBER:

We spent all of September telling each other wistfully that the summer is over but we didn’t really believe it.  Well, there’s no kidding ourselves now.  It’s gonna be 6°C at the weekend.  Get your woolen socks out kids and check out these fabulous literary events:

All poets welcome to bring, zines and poems to share.

GO TO THE THEATRE: English Language Theatre: Noel Coward’s “Fallen Angels”

Starring Melissa Holroyd as Julia and Laura Cameron as Jane, two bored ladies of leisure who spend their day working themselves up into a drunken state of excitement in anticipation of their long-lost lover’s return.  It’s really funny.  Apparently Noel Coward is meant to have an Umlaut on the e, though, which is really, really, really poncey, even for a gay playwright from the 1920s.
