‘I’ll be back’ - more’s the pity, says Picturenose’s James Drew of the latest installment, Terminator Salvation.Ho, hum. The Terminator franchise takes this reviewer as far back as his early teens, when James Cameron’s dark, moody and genuinely thrilling first installment confirmed Arnold Schwarzenegger’s megastar status in 1984. It was followed, in 1991, by Cameron’s equally good sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, then by Jonathan Mostow’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).
The previous sequel fell foul, somewhat unfairly, of most critics - one thing’s for sure, it knocks the latest film into a cocked hat.
Directed by McG (don't ask), and written by John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris, Salvation picks up the story in the middle of the battle of the future that Sarah Connor et al were so desperate to prevent - the Skynet machines became self aware in the early part of the 21st century, the global nuclear holocaust Judgement Day came and went and now the group of survivors, led by John Connor (Christian Bale), are fighting to keep the machines from finishing off humanity for good.
You can forget any concept of time-line/causality coherence - what we now have is Connor desperate to find young Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin), who, as fans will recall, an older version thereof was sent back in time to prevent the original Terminator (Arnie) from killing Connor's mother. In fact, he ended up making the beast with two backs with Sarah, and she fell pregnant with, you guessed it, John Connor. Where's H.G. Wells when you need him?
