Picturenose's James Drew has his customary stab at picking the winners – he’s willing to bet that the bookies’ money is safe this year...Hmmm, yes, it’s that time of year again – regular Expatica readers will already know how ’successful’ I normally am when it comes to picking the film, players, director and writers ahead of the most glittering night in the cinematic calendar. Will my predictions for 22 February 2009 be any more accurate, one wonders? Only one way to find out…
I’m going to try and keep the verbal folderal to a minimum this time around - it seems to me that the more I bang on about why a particular film/actor/actress/director/screenplay writer simply MUST lift the gong, the less chance my nominee has of leaving with the prize come Oscar night. So, it’s sweet, short and simple this time around – here goes:
Best Actor: Frank Langella, Frost Nixon (2008)
There are those who may argue that Sean Penn in Milk (2008) would be a worthier winner, but pooh-pooh to them - Langella lives and breathes Tricky Dicky. The Oscar going elsewhere would be a travesty.
Best Actress: Angelina Jolie, Changeling (2008)
I wasn’t as enamoured with Eastwood’s latest as the rest of the world seemingly was, but it’s unlikely that any other actress will win. Just in my opinion, you understand…
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight (2008)
Truly, there’s only one way this one’s going to go - I’m staking not only my reputation (such as it is) on that, but also a few of my hard-earned at the bookies. A marvellous performance by Ledger as The Joker, combined with the fact that it will be a posthumous win, make it a racing certainty.

Best Supporting Actress: Penélope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Look, because she is so amazingly sexy and pretty, she deserves it, OK? Any problems with that?
Best Film: Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
It swept all before it at the Golden Globes, won Best Director and Best Film at BAFTA 2009, and my betting is that Danny Boyle’s ‘sleeper’ is likely to follow suit at the Oscars. A hugely enjoyable, intelligent feel-good flick? How could the Yanks say no?
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
See above.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Peter Morgan, Frost/Nixon
Peter Morgan’s electrifying adaptation of his own play.
Best Original Screenplay: Dustin Lance Black, Milk
And this will be, perhaps unfairly, the only major award that Milk takes. Remember, you read it all here first…enjoy the Oscars!
