The Klassical Junkie: Cabaret Classical A hip-hop remix of Bach? Expatica’s classical reviewer, Sumi Somaskanda, says a new double-act cabaret show is guaranteed to please classical and comedy fans alike.

I love Brahms, Beethoven and Bach but let’s face it—their music is some pretty serious stuff. So as the days get shorter and the skies grayer, I wanted to lighten things up and take a twist on the traditional classical music I share I usually share with you here … with a little comedy.

Who said music can’t be fun and funny? It can be, and cellist Rebecca Carrington proves it. The classically trained musician decided to spin her talent into a comedy-music cabaret show 13 years ago.

She launched a one-woman show as a singer, impressionist and comedian and won over both audiences and critics. Since then, Carrington has teamed up with her husband, actor and vocalist Colin Griffiths-Brown, to create a double-act show called “Me and my Cello.”

If you haven’t seen Carrington and Griffiths-Brown in action, you’re in for a treat. The Berlin-based duo puts on a quirky, fun and unpredictable performance for packed houses of both German and English speakers.

Carrington uses her cello for a wide repertoire of jokes, sketches and skits—like a hilarious Bollywood-imitation song and a hip-hop mix of Bach’s famous Cello Suite in G major that’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

While the performances are made up of colorful commentary on different cultures, languages and peoples, the duo’s incredible talent is what makes the medley such a success. Carrington has performed with the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony, to name but a few associations.

Griffiths-Brown is an accomplished theater actor and singer, having performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the a cappella group “The Magnets.” The third element to the performance is Carrington’s 18th century cello, Joe, who is more a character than a musical prop.

The duo is also really, really funny. Their comedic ability is evident from the moment the curtains go up. Carrington has a knack for languages, impressions and best of all, accents: she can speak in anything from Indian and French to Texan.

Not to mention her incredibly versatile singing voice, which spans the entire spectrum of musical genres, from pop to opera. Don’t miss Carrington’s uncanny trumpet imitation during the duo’s blues performance, with Griffiths-Brown as the bass beat—if you close your eyes, you’d think you were actually listening to a trumpet!

“Me and my Cello” has been a blockbuster success, receiving critical acclaim from German and European media—just check out Carrington’s website for the dozens of press features. She also won a variety of honors and awards, including Germany’s highest cabaret award, the Prix Pantheon, and four comedy/cabaret awards in France.

All that success means Carrington and Griffiths-Brown are a hot item—they’re booked solid for shows across Germany and Europe through the end of next year.

The double-act will be touring France, Austria and the Netherlands for most of October but they return to Germany at the end of the month for performances in Frankfurt-Höchst and Kaarst. Head to their new website, www.carrington-brown.com, to check out all of their tour dates and pick up some tickets fast!
