Classic New Year's Eve TV: Dinner for One For the "same procedure as every year", watch it here!

On New Year's Eve in Germany and Scandanavia, TV stations broadcast a short English theatrical performance titled "Dinner for One". A punch line from the comedy sketch, "same procedure as every year" has become a catch phrase in Germany.

Though widely unknown in the UK, this British New Year's Eve movie is hugely popular in Continental Europe. It is famous in other countries, such as South Africa and is a cult classic in Finland, Faroe Islands and Austria.

"Dinner for One", also known as "The 90th Birthday", or by its corresponding German title, "Der 90. Geburtstag", is a comedy sketch written by British author Lauri Wylie for the theatre in the 1920s. German television station  NDR recorded a performance of the piece in 1963. This short comical play subsequently went on to become the most frequently repeated TV programme ever (according to the Guinness Book of Records).

"Dinner for One" is about the 90th birthday of an elderly upper-class woman who hosts a dinner every year for her close friends. By her 90th birthday though, all of her friends have passed away and it's up to the butler to empty all the glasses!
