The healthcare system has improved considerably over the last few years and is now something the Spanish can be justifiably proud of. Here's a guide to insurance, doctors, dentists, pharmacies and emergency treatment.
I was recently taken into hospital in Osuna and found to need an emergency operation. I can not fault the treatment I received. The ambulance arrived in less than 20 mins, from arrival at the hospital at approximately 7pm I had seen a consultant, had blood tests, given urine samples, had a drip tap fitted, had surgery and been returned to my room by 1.30 the next morning.I shared a room complete with ensuite bathroom with a lovely Senora, and my husband to stay by my bed. I left after 3 days. The only papers I provided was my NIE.
I lived in Catalunya near Barcelona, non eu but have a CAT salut card. The system almost works well for the basics, I have Hiv and the level of care in THE BIG CITIES was excellent. I would stringly recomend Bellvitge Hospital in Barcelona.
However, if u suffer from, and need treatment for pain (stronger than paracetamol or tramadol) you will most likely suffer for no reason.
even with x rays and medical reports from my home country, NO specialist would help me access any of the stronger appropriate medicines for my condition. One Trama specialist even forcefully told me to leave his office for no other reasona than asking for a specific commonly used european medicine. My advice to any body w/ health problems moving to Spain is to proceed w/ caution and treatment varies widely depending on which provincia you are in. In Madrid the hospital workers had no problems insulting immigrants without provocation.

Im planning to move to Spain this year and am worried about the level of care I'll recieve for my inflammatory bowel disease and also about the cost of my various medications.
In the UK I have regular and good support at my local hospital and regular blood tests. Will I get similar care in most of the main cities??
Also in the UK I pre-pay for my medications as some of them are very expensive and some months I require a number of different prescriptions, so it works out tha I pay £10 per month approximately. Is there any kind of similar system in Spain or do I have to pay for my prescriptions individually? If its the latter then is there a way I can find out how much various drugs cost in Spain?
