Pop, rock and jazz previews - Germany 01/07/2008 00:00

Katja Schröder previews what's hot on the German music scene this month.

Hello again. Back from your holidays? I spent a week in Italy with my boyfriend last month. Pasta, la mer and a one or two grappas. It was great but we listened to no music whatsoever. Or are you just planning your holidays? Then put your plans on hold until next month because in July, there’s plenty to stick around Germany for.
If you’re interested in ska music, I have two hot tips for you. To begin with there’s Los Fastidios, a punk/ska outfit from Verona in Italy. In my humble opinion, their music is a little bit too well-behaved to be called punk or ska but the guys look tough and maybe they sound as hard live as appearances might suggest. You can hear them in Lindau, Schwäbisch Gmüd, Schopfheim, Benkenhagen and Nürnberg.
And then there is Russkaja. Yes, they are Russians but they live in Vienna. The band consists of seven guys who get together with a big band live to play music with Russian soul at breakneck speed. And, as you might imagine, they sing in Russian. See Russkaja in Hamburg and Lörrach.
There is one massive event you just shouldn’t miss this month - the MELT! Festival at Ferropolis, Graefenhainichen. You could simply never find a better location for a festival than Ferropolis which was formerly the site of a coal mine. At the side of a lake, among rolling fields, five enormous excavators tower above the festival site. The party takes place right in the middle of these. It’ll be the best party of your life with some of the greatest bands and DJs around. And the setting is breath-taking. When the sun rises over the lake after a night of hot partying, you’re sure to get goose bumps. This year’s festival which runs for the first time over three days is the eleventh and features appearances by Björk, The Editors, Zoot Woman, GusGus, Hot Chip, Len Faki, M.A.N.D.Y. ... Sorry, but I have to end the list there and shed a tear because I can’t make it to MELT! this year – I spent all my money on my Italian holiday.
If you’re in the same unhappy, penniless position, there is a festival taking place out there this month which is completely free. Rheinkultur 2008 is on July 5 in Bonn. Okay, maybe the location won’t make such a great visual impact on you as MELT! would. But there are some bands appearing that I would recommend: for example, Eternal Tango, Dune, Tomte and Air Traffic.
Maybe see you in Bonn then. Or perhaps I’ll just stay at home and look at my holiday photos instead.
