Tread carefully in business and social situations and be aware of cultural nuances. Elise Krentzel helps prepare you to do business within this small and independent nation.
"Switzerland is considered to be a prime test market in Europe where new technology products and services are often introduced and used first prior to national launches elsewhere."
It's because the Swiss are willing to pay exorbitant prices for "new" products. It supports their self image of being on the cutting edge.
"While openness towards technology may give the Swiss an air of daring-do — do not be misled. The Swiss tend towards conservatism, empirical-thinking and prefer to stick to the rules. Swiss culture remains ethnocentric – a strong belief in ones own cultural group - and maintains a cautious attitude towards outside influences."
One of the best summarizations of the Swiss I have ever read. It says it all. A couple of points of emphasis though.
"The Swiss can be rather earnest,".
Read dead serious with no sense of humor. Best not to speak to them in social situations at all as its very easy to offend them.
"Never give an expensive gift, this can be seen as a bribe"
Note to anyone competing against the Swiss outside of Switzerland. Assume the customer you are courting is being very well greased by your Swiss competitor. But, it's not a bribe.
I have lived in Switzerland and have been spending 3 to 4 months of every year here for over a decade. To those spending a weekend here, remember the Italian border is just hours away.
