Stuttgart promises tough anti-doping measures 03/08/2007 00:00
3 August 2007
Stuttgart (dpa) - The cycling world championships will go ahead as planned next month after all parties involved promised a tough fight against doping, local organizers said on Thursday.
"The city is available as host. There is a chance for a turnaround in cycling," said Susanne Eisenmann, head of the championship organizing committee and mayor for sports of Stuttgart.
The world championships are scheduled for September 25-30.
There were calls to hand back the event to the ruling body UCI after a recent series of doping affairs in the sport.
But everyone involved, from the ruling body UCI to the German and World Anti-Doping Agency, have signed a so-called anti-doping declaration in which an unprecedented amount of doping tests are to be carried out, out-of-competition and at the championships.
