Javier Solana delivers nuclear proposal to Iran 06/06/2006 00:00

6 June 2006

TEHRAN - Iran on Tuesday confirmed receipt of the latest international proposal on the country's controversial nuclear programme.

"Yes, we received the proposal. We will thoroughly it study item by item and then we will reply," Iranian Chief Nuclear Negotiator Ali Larijani told reporters after his meeting with EU foreign relations chief Javier Solana.

"The talks (with Solana) were positive and also the proposals contain positive aspects but also some ambiguities," Larijani told the news network Khabar but refrained from disclosing further details.

"At the current juncture, all steps must be taken very thoroughly but what we consider as positive and even welcome is that the Europeans have chosen the path of negotiations for settling the issue," said Larijani who is also secretary of the National Security Council.

He hoped that even after the final evaluation of the proposal, the diplomatic channel with the EU would be continued "for reaching a moderate and rational solution."

Solana said that the EU was eager to continue relations with Iran upon mutual confidence and trust.

Solana had earlier Tuesday formally delivered to Iran the proposal which was agreed last week by the US, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and China.

The proposal includes incentives as well as possible sanctions if Iran chooses not to comply with the demands of the international community.

Solana also plans to meet with Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki later Tuesday before leaving Tehran.
