India recalls defence attache in Germany 01/09/2006 00:00

1 September 2006

NEW DELHI - The government of India has recalled its defence attache at the Indian embassy in Germany, a Defence Ministry official said Friday on the condition of anonymity.

According to the official, Brigadier PC Panjikar was recalled because the government felt Panjikar was exceeding his brief while carrying out his duties.

The recall came days before Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee is to embark on a visit to Germany September 5 to 8 for talks with officials in the German government and defence industry.

Panjikar, a mechanized infantry officer, was called home for allegedly canvassing armaments firms after serving two of his three years in Berlin, news reports said, citing ministry sources.

Although German defence companies have yet to secure major contracts with India, some of the leading companies are exporting counterwarfare electronic equipment to India.
