German painter Tomma Abts wins Turner Prize 05/12/2006 00:00

London (dpa) - German-born abstract painter Tomma Abts won Britain's prestigious Turner Prize Monday, the only painter in a short list that included a video artist, sculptor and installation artist.
The often controversial annual arts award, and 25,000-pound (49,000-dollar) prize money, was presented to 39-year-old Abts at a ceremony at London's Tate Britain gallery. The 11 abstract paintings by Abts that were recognized are in acrylic and oil, and all measure exactly 48 by 38 centimetres.
Abts is the first painter in eight years to win the prize, which began in 1984 and honours British artists younger than 50. Last year's award went to installation artist Simon Starling, while past winners include Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst.
