EU welcomes release of British soldiers 05/04/2007 00:00

5 April 2007

Berlin (dpa) - The German presidency of the European Union Thursday welcomed the release of British naval personnel seized last month.

The EU had "repeatedly contacted the Iranian authorities to intercede strongly on behalf of the 15 British sailors and marines," the presidency said.

It expressed the wish that Iran would work with the international community and the EU to find solutions in other areas.

In particular it called on Iran to "seek a solution to the controversy over the Iranian nuclear programme through dialogue and negotiation," in terms of an offer made by the foreign ministers of China, France, Germany, Russia, Britain and the US.
