Court bans elderly airliner pilots 02/02/2007 00:00
2 February 2007 Karlsruhe, Germany (dpa) - A 65-year-old professional pilot in Germany who loves flying has lost a case at the country's highest court where he asked to fly airliners for a few more years. DPA Subject: German news
Under German law, an airline-transport pilot licence (ATPL) expires at age 65.
The pilot challenged this as a breach of his constitutional right to work. But after studying his claim, the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe said it would not hear the case.
Judges said a special rule for pilots was needed because the lives and safety of passengers were dependent on their pilot's mental and physical fitness. The principal pilots on larger airliners must have the ATPL.
