Chaos as Berlin hit by railway warning strike 04/10/2006 00:00
4 October 2006
BERLIN - The German capital Berlin was hit Wednesday by a rail warning strike, forcing thousands of commuters to face transport cancellations and delays of up to two hours.
The chaos in Berlin has also effected rail transport into eastern Germany.
According to the Transnet and GDBA unions, the strike began around 5 am (0700 GMT) and ended around 7 am (0900 GMT).
The head of the Transnet union, Norbert Hansen, said: "Management should see (the strike) as a signal finally to present to us a reasonable offer."
Workers of Germany's state-owned railway Deutsche Bahn first began staged a warning strike last Friday to demand job security for their members beyond a privatization of the company.
