Berlin thief caught after returning for lost finger 06/06/2007 00:00

6 June 2007

Berlin (dpa) - A thief was caught after returning to the scene of his crime to recover a finger he tore off in a bungled robbery, Berlin police said Wednesday.

The 35-year-old robber fled when the alarm went off after he broke into an office building late Tuesday in a bid to steal computer equipment.

He managed to escape by jumping out of a window but snagged his middle finger while trying to scale a three-metre fence and tore it off.

He was nabbed shortly afterwards when he returned to the scene and asked a watchman to help him find the missing digit.

Doctors were unable to reattach the finger, a police spokeswoman said.
