Frankfurt (dpa) - A man who went to jail for eight years for a bank robbery he did not commit won 150,000 euros in damages Tuesday from a German scientist who wrongly identified him as the offender on a closed-circuit TV image.
The true offender admitted the crime after the innocent man had been paroled, and was duly sentenced in July 2001 to 11-and-a-half years in jail for the 1994 hold-up in the city of Nuremberg.
At the first trial, the scientist had said he was "nearly 100 per cent sure" that the defendant was the man filmed by the security camera. Setting damages, a state superior court in Frankfurt said he obscured from the judges any grounds for doubt.
Government authorities separately paid the innocent man 24,000 euros for his wasted years behind bars.
