Punks on trial for setting dogs on Jewish schoolboy 04/04/2008 00:00
The pair is alleged to have threatened and insulted five students from a Jewish high school and set their dogs on one of them.
Berlin -- Two punks went on trial Thursday, accused of an anti-Semitic attack on a Jewish schoolboy in Berlin.
The pair is alleged to have threatened and insulted five students from a Jewish high school and set their dogs on one of them.
One of the accused, age 31, denied any involvement in the January 16 attack. The other, age 27, refused to answer the charges.
The court heard evidence from a 16-year-old schoolboy who was forced to run for shelter in a bakery after being confronted by the two punks.
"One of the punks came at me with his two dogs and shouted 'attack, attack'," the schoolboy said. The boy was not injured in the incident.
The punks, who live on the street, have been in custody since the attack.
They are charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and insulting behaviour.
The trial resumes April 14.

Every single Punk I met was either a militant leftist or an anarchist. Beating up Nazis? Sure. Setting a police car on fire? Yeah, why not. But attacking jewish people? Not likely. Something's not right here...

The word "punk" has several meanings, not just the one you are thinking of here...

Especially look at definitions 7 and 8.

I'm aware of that. But neither have I ever heard anyone casually refer to themselves as a "punk" when in fact they weren't part of the Punk scene, nor have I ever come across a news source describing people as punks just because they are young troublemakers.
Sure, who hasn't heard the typical "get off my lawn, you punk". But that's a colloquialism, isn't it.

I found some German news sources now that state that the "punks" connected to this incidents are associated with the "Punk" scene. Now I am as much mystified as you are. It is a strange incident for sure.

"insulting behavior"??? does anyone know what that is defined as? sounds frighteningly ambiguous.
also, there is not much detail on the incident. it's entirely possible the attack had nothing to do with the victims being jewish.
