The UN human rights office welcomed on Monday Libya's announcement of a commission of inquiry to probe the controversial killing of ousted strongman Moamer Kadhafi.

"We welcome the commission of inquiry," said Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"We stress the need to ensure that due process is followed, in accordance with international law, in the treatment of all detainees," she added.

The spokeswoman also reiterated UN chief Ban Ki-moon's call on all sides in the conflict to avoid reprisals.

"This is not a time for revenge, but for healing and rebuilding," she added.
