UN chief Ban to open parliament speakers meet
More than 150 speakers of parliaments are expected to gather in Geneva later July for a conference to be opened by UN chief Ban Ki-moon, organisers of the meeting said Wednesday.
The three-day World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is expected to adopt a declaration on "guaranteeing the global democratic responsibility for the common good," said the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Held once every five years, this year's conference would mark the third such gathering. The previous two conferences were held in New York.
Geneva-based IPU is a grouping of 155 national parliaments and assemblies.
