A Saudi tourist drowned in a rafting accident after setting out on a river in central Switzerland, police said Tuesday.

The 31-year-old man was with 12 other tourists from the United States, Denmark and Saudi Arabia when he and a team-mate fell into the water shortly after they set out on two rafts.

While his team-mate was quickly rescued, the young Saudi was caught in the river current and knocked unconscious.

Rescuers who pulled him out of the water managed to resuscitate him on the spot and he was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, but died Monday evening.

Police have opened an inquiry into the accident, on the river Lutschine in the Bern canton.
