INDIANAPOLIS -- Thomas Luthi of Switzerland was hospitalised following a crash Saturday during practice in the 250 cc motorcycle class at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 22-year-old rider, who competes for the Emmi-Caffe Latte team, got too high exiting the 11th turn, flipped over the handle bars, landed hard on his back and struck his head on the asphalt during practice.

He did not appear to move on the track before being placed on a backboard, lifted onto a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.

There was no immediate report on the extent of his injuries.

Luthi won the 125 cc title in 2005 and is ninth this season in the 250 class, one of the support series in the MotoGP world championship.
